San Diego Chargers Post Season Review
14-2, #1 seed and home field though out the playoffs. All sounds good until you get to the playoffs part of the season. I don’t mean to sound negative but we are talking about one of the worst playoff coaches in the history of the NFL. At 5-12 Marty has been ousted from the playoffs as routinely as Liz Taylor out on the town looking for a new husband. I really thought this time would be different. Having the MVP in LT and being on a 10 game winning streak and also being undefeated at home in 2006. This felt like a win win situation for the Chargers. Enter the 3 time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots in to the Murph (or what’s the new name??) and out come some of the most confusing and disturbing plays and decisions these eyes have ever seen. First, going for it on 3rd and 11 on the PATS 30 why not try a FG and get on the board. Next we have the head butt by Drayton Florence, what are you thinking???? You just stopped the Pats on 3rd down and 13 and you get up and bump an opponent in the face, 15 yards and 1st down for the bad guys. This gave the PATS 3 points and how much did they lose by? Last we have the Challenge of a play that was clearly a fumble. That time out might have been the difference between a 54 and a 30 yard FG in the last few seconds of the game. I know I’m rambling but this just gets my blood flowing to no end.
Now that the season is over let’s get to the situation at hand a post season review.
QB: Phillip Rivers performed above average for a first time starter. But to be honest when you have a player like LT your numbers only have to be average to get a W in the win column. 61.7% for the season is great for a first year starter. 22 TD’s and 9 INT’s again is very good for a first year starter. Next is the 460 attempts for the season, this is exactly the recipe for a new QB entering the league, run the ball and pass only when needed. I think Phillip Rivers will take a step forward in 2007 and make this team very happy with the choice between himself and one Eli Manning if it already isn’t.
RB: LT, 31 TD’s taking a lot of pressure off the new QB. What else need to be said? He runs he throws he blocks he is one of the best all time and is only 27.
WR and TE: This is a position that will more than likely be addressed in 2007. Gates is a stud and the team needs to get some more talent around him to make him even better. McCardell is getting very long in the tooth and after that this team doesn’t have much talent at the position. I will say that I like Vincent Jackson’s potential. He has shown a ton of upside on one hand and then I see the bone headed move in OAK where he show boats and almost costs his team the game. But overall I like him as#1 or#2 for 2007.
DEF: I’m really looking forward to see how the LB unit shapes up for 2007. I believe that Donnie Edwards has played his last game for the Chargers and he will dealt for a draft pick. I see NE making a play for him. But other than that I like the prospects that are in the cupboard for the team at LB: Matt Wilhelm, Tim Dobbins, Shaun Phillips, and Stephen Cooper and of course Merriman. One player in the secondary I think will make headlines next year will be Antonio Cromartie. He has unlimited potential and with a full season of OTA’s and some good coaching the sky’s the limit for this kid.
So you in a few weeks for some pre-draft talk.
