Houston Texans Off Season Update

The ex-Bronco tandem of GM Rick Smith and HC Gary Kubiak have reviewed tapes of last season's games and decided where they need help. Most of that help will come in the NFL Draft; the Texans are looking to stockpile picks, not spend them.

After roughly two weeks of a very busy Free Agency period, the Texans have signed four players, each of whom addresses a prominent need:

1. LT J Black, ex-KC offensive lineman. So far in their young NFL history the Texans have been snake-bit at the LT position. First Tony Boselli's career never could be restarted due to shoulder problems. Then OL Pitts played well there, but he is now a starting OG. Last year's bevy of LT's were not impressive or got injured. So Black is now the newest LT. If he can stay healthy and perform reasonably well, it will help immensely.

2. RB Ahman Green, from Green Bay. Green recovered from a knee tendon injury in 2005 to play 13 games in 2006 and rush for over 1000 yards. He may have lost some speed but he is a very well conditioned athlete and immediately is the starter in Houston.

3. LB Danny Clark IV, ex Saint and ex Raider. Last year was not a good year for Clark, but his previous two seasons were very good. Exactly where he plays for the Texans is a bit of a mystery at this stage....

4. PN Chad Stanley was re-signed. Stanley had a poor season in 2006 by his standards. I am sure the Texans are hoping he returns to form.

The Lingering Question: what happens with David Carr? Rumors have been swirling since the end of the season- will the Texans trade him, cut him, or keep him? Recently speculation has arisen as to what would happen if QB B Quinn was still there when the Texans pick at 1.8? Other speculation indicates Carr can be had for a 3rd round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft....stay tuned!

An early perspective on what the Texans need in this draft:

1. another pass rushing DE.
2. a young QB to groom.
3. a RB....
4. Safety and/or CB
5. WR

these positions will be addressed in the draft.
