Green Bay Packers 2007 NFL Draft Review
Once again GM Ted Thompson accumulated extra picks by trading down in several rounds, finally ending with 11 total picks in the Draft. Fans and pundits almost universally vilified him for the picks he made, mostly based on the assumption that he did not obtain an offensive playmaker in this draft. At any rate, here are the picks:
1 16 DT Justin Harrell Tenn
Before suffering a torn biceps tendon Harrell was almost universally recognized as the best DT in the draft. His stock slid as a result of this injury, but he demonstrated at the combine that strength was returning to his arm by getting 20+ reps in 225 pound weight lifts. Harrell has good strength and quickness plus some pass rushing skills. But his job will be to keep OLmen off Barnett and Hawk. If he can accomplish that then this will be a very good pick.
2 63 RB Brandon Jackson Nebraska
Jackson was in a group of RB’s clustered together after the top 2 guys. Jackson split time with other RB’s at Nebraska but finished the last 6 games in 2006 as the starter. He has an injury history on both shoulders which caused some concern. Jackson has good speed and hands, but like many college players will need to bulk up to survive the NFL. He will provide competition for the Packers RBBC offense.
3 78 WR James Jones San Jose St
Jones is a relatively big WR at 6-1 207 lbs, built a lot like Sterling Sharpe. Known for his short area quickness, very good hands and strength he is not a speed WR. Jones should compete for the WR3 job.
4 89 S Aaron Rouse Va Tech
Rouse has LB size ( 6’2” 223 lbs) playing at SS. He actually played SS his senior year but was a LB previously. Rouse has been described as not playing up to his size, with questionable quickness although very good speed for his size. Questions remain about his coverage abilities.
4 119 OT Allen Barbre Missouri Southern State
Barbre has been described as having excellent size, strength and quick feet to play OT in the NFL. He will need to bulk up to contend with the DE in the NFL, but was drafted to be heir apparent at LT. Supposedly he will play OG his first year….
5 157 WR David Clowney Va Tech
Clowney is extremely fast, but his route running ability is not very polished. View him now as a deep threat that needs to become more polished. Could be kick returner. A several year project.
6 191 FB Korey Hall Boise St
Played LB in college, drafted with intention of converting to FB and provide competition at that position. Could be very good special team player in 07 if he makes squad.
6 192 LB Desmond Bishop California
All PAC10 at LB, dropped this far due to concerns about his speed and quickness. A good tackler, and obviously has some talent. Will compete as backup MLB. If makes team will improve special teams.
6 193 PK Mason Crosby Colorado
Known for his proficiency at driving kickoffs into the endzone and making very long FB’s Crosby was drafted to provide competition at the PK position. If he can perform like he did in college he could win the job.
7 RB DeShawn Wynn Florida
Offers a contrast to the other RB’s on the roster with his size: 6’ 2” 228 lbs. Classic under achiever in college, carries a reputation that reflects that-will need to prove he will work in order to gain position on this team.
7 243 TE Clark Harris Rutgers
Harris provides competition at a position that sorely needs someone to take charge and become a playmaker, particularly in the red zone. That used to be Bubba Franks but he suffered badly last year. Harris carries a reputation as a poor blocker but a guy with good hands but lacking in speed. Harris is a longshot to make this team but will probably be given every opportunity to succeed.
