TB Pre-Camp Report

Tampa Bay is all abuzz over the QB situation: will Chris Simms return as the #1, or will Jeff Garcia take over? Or will Jake Plummer un-retire and actually go to TB? Or, as in a bad mystery novel, will a mysterious and heretofore unexpected player get the nod? Stay tuned for further developments, but don't bet against Garcia.

RB is settled, with Cadillac Williams returning and Michael Pittman backing up. None of the other prospects excite.

Likewise for WR, with Michael Clayton and Joey Galloway starting and Maurice Stovall, Ike Hilliard, and a cast of no-names providing backup.

In the OL there have been some changes. Last year’s picks Davin Joseph and Jeremy Trueblood return as starters at OG and OT, respectively. This year’s 2nd rounder, Arron Sears, will take over for Dan Buenning at the other OG when he is ready, allowing Buenning to bump tired and injury-prone 10-year vet John Wade to the curb at OC. Free agent pickup Luke Petitgout takes over for Anthony Davis at the other OT, sending Davis to the bench.

At TE, the Bucs signed Jerramy Stevens, no longer welcome in SEA. Does this mean a lack of confidence in Alex Smith, or just TB’s tendency to have a boatload of TE’s on the roster? Dunno. But, Dave Moore, the wiley old vet known mostly as a long-snapper and good for a couple sneak red-zone TD’s a year, retired. A cast of thousands contends for the backup roles.

Over on the defense, age has decimated the team, and the Bucs are starting to respond.

At DE, they signed Patrick Chukwurah and Kevin Carter, and drafted the top DE, Gaines Adams of Florida, to supplement and eventually replace the aging and injured Simeon Rice, and the aging and uninspiring Greg Spires, both of whom remain on the team at this time.

At DT, they signed former KC Chief Ryan Sims to join Chris Hovan and Ellis Wyms in the rotation.

At IB, Sheldon Quarles was released due to his age and injury history, and Barrett Ruud gets to step up to the starting lineupe.

At OB, Derrick Brooks and Ryan Nece return, but Nece is being supplanted by FA signee Cato June. Also, 3rd round pick Quincy Black will get some seasoning as Brooks’ eventual replacement.

In the secondary, all the old starters return. Ronde Barber and Brian Kelley are the CBs, although there is talk of a trade for Kelley. If so, either Patrick Buchanon or Sammie Davis, failures in previous starting opportunities for other teams, get another chance. At S, Will Allen and Jermaine Phillips return, with support from Donte Nicholson and draftees Sabby Piscatelli and Tanard Jackson.
