Fantasy RB for 2007 and beyond:
Tier 1:
Adrian Peterson (MIN): This guy will be a monster, maybe even this year, for the Minnesota Vikings. Even from draft day the team doctors didn’t seem too worried about the 2006 injury. The word o the street is that the Vikes will use Chester Taylor in more of a 3rd down and split out in the slot type of player and AD will be used as more of a between the tackles type runner. This is great news for AD owners. In redraft leagues I think he will have value even in 2007. But for dynasty he should be a Top 3 player in all rookie drafts. If he has issues with the shoulder and actually has mid season surgery then it might be a great time for owners to try and buy him.
Marshawn Lynch (BUF): Marshawn is put into a great position for again both Redraft and Dynasty Leagues. He will be the starter from day one and with the upgrades to the OL and a more mature JP Losman he might have a very good chance to do some damages this year. If the team has smart moves on its OL this offseason and these guys come together this could be a very good OL.
Brandon Jackson (GB): Anther guy put into a good position to produce right away. GB has a young middle OL and two veteran OT’s. This group might actually be a surprise in 2007 as an up and coming squad. Jackson should only have to contend with Morency for carries. I think it will be a one horse race and Jackson will be the day one starter and get a good amount of touches on the ground and in the air.
Tier 2:
Michael Bush (OAK): The ONLY reason he isn’t in Tier 1 is worry over the leg injury. This kid is a bowling ball with speed! I think Bush will be the SOD if he can bounce back from this injury. He might even be the easiest to get. With the depth the Raiders have at RB I think he has the chance to heal over the 2007 season and be an absolute monster for 2008. Jordan’s salary goes from $1,000,000 to $4,700,000 in 2008. Rhodes is in my mind no more than a change of pace 3rd down type back. Beware of the Bush in 2008!!!
Chris Henry (TEN): I don’t like Henry’s chances to get a lot of carries for two reasons. First they resigned Chris Brown and second VY is vulture a lot of rushing yards in 2007. LenDale White is in my eyes a bust. He can’t get his weight in check and that wouldn’t always be a major problem but he doesn’t seem to have the internal drive to be the best. To me it seems like he doesn’t even care to be mediocre, but enough about LW. Henry was a bit of a surprise in the 2nd round and no one is really sure what to expect out of Henry with extended playing time. I can’t wait to find out what the brass sees in this young man.
Lorenzo Booker (MIA): To quote Cam Cameron “We drafted a Football Player”. Lorenzo’s overall value is increased due to two major reasons. First is Ricky will not be back with the team and second for the fact that he is a very good receiver out of the back field and the coaching staff seems to want to get him in the game and make an impact sooner rather than later. The ceiling is only hurt by the presence of another tough young back in Ronnie Brown. I think we will see a lot of Booker on 3rd down and he will make more of an impact on the field and not on the stat sheet.
Tier 3:
Kenny Irons: This was the toughest player to rank. I know everyone says don’t forget how tough the SEC defenses and that he produces very well when he’s healthy. I think that he will serve as the 3rd down back and have to out play current 3rd down back Kenny Watson to get on the field (I doubt that will be a difficult thing). This of course will put an end to the Chris Perry experiment (about time).
Antonio Pittman: At the moment Pittman is virtually buried on the depth chart but still has some value as the contract for McAllister is due to start a drastic increase over the next few years ($2.6 in 07 to $3.6 in 08 to $5.2 in 09). He does have the talent he now just needs the window of opportunity which could come through injury to one of the two guys above him.
