NFC South
QB – They kept 4, including the very inconsistent Chris Simms, who can’t seem to shake last year’s injury. They may be keeping him to trade him. Also, there is some indication that Simms was kept on the roster despite Jon Gruden’s objections. Meanwhile, Garcia seems to have the position under control.
RB, XP, XK – as expected
WR – There is still no clear answer as to who will play opposite Galloway. Boston, Clayton, and Stovall are still in the mix, with Boston the leader – until his recent DUI arrest, Stovall fading, and Clayton coming on. Stay tuned here.
TE – Alex Smith is the leader in the clubhouse, but Jerramy Stevens looked good in camp.
OL – Well, it has to be better than last year. Looks like John Wade held off the competition at OC, thanks largely to Dan Beunning still recovering from his injury. Buenning will probably take over later in the season. Youngsters Sears, Trueblood, and Joseph, and free agent pickup Luke Petitgout round out the starters.
DE – Simeon Rice got canned, as expected. But Greg Spires remains to uninspire. Kevin Carter and Patrick Chukwurah are backups along with heir-apparent Gaines Adams, who has been slow to develop.
DT, LB, DB – as expected
Coaching: Gruden is clearly on the hot seat this year (see above with the Simms situation). He apparently has lost a lot of clout with the owners and the front office.
