Houston Texans-can they continue this start?

After week 5 the Texans have a 3-2 record, which is the first time in their short history they had a positive record after 5 games! So the question is this, does this indicate a sea change in their play, or will they revert to previous form?

So far the Texans have lost a close a game at home to the Colts by a 30-24 and won several close games too. The play of QB Matt Schaub has galvanized his teammates and the fans. Both now expect their QB to make plays and lead the team to victory. TE Owen Daniels has become more of a focus of the offense with all the injuries to WR's. Andre Davis has emerged as a threat, given his opportunity to play when all the other WR's went down with injuries. On Defense, S Von Hutchins has taken over and produced enough to keep that job. Rookie Amobi Okoye leads the team in sacks and is learning every week. Eventually he will be a stud!! DE Mario Williams is playing very well, according to HC Gary Kubiak, but the stats don't reflect that fact (at least in terms of tackles, etc.). His play is leading to opportunities for other DLmen.

So far this season the team has been hard hit at injuries at certain positions: RB, OL, WR and Safety. RB Ahman Green has missed several games with a knee injury. In his absence neither Ron Dayne or Samkon Gado have demonstrated any consistency. The WR position has been devastated by injuries to Andre Johnson, Jacoby Jones and Jerome Mathis. Only Kevin Walter has been spared by this epidemic. Those three have missed at least 2 games and are likely to miss many more! OC Steve McKinney was lost for the season two weeks ago when he tore his ACL. Mike Flanagan replaces him. Flanagan is not as physical in the run game but is a very polished pass protector.

So what's in store for the Texans the remainder of the season? First, they now have a QB who can lead them to victory at the end of a close game, which breeds confidence. But, their run game has suffered without A Green as the main guy in the first 3 quarters of a game, which allows them to play Ron Dayne in the 4th quarter and smash a wornout DL. The absence of WR A Johnson has not hurt that much yet, but it will if he is out much longer. The defense is playing well, but needs to shore up its run defense-last week RB Ronnie Brown Miami ran for over 100 yards against them.

Bottom line- IF things go right for them they could make the Playoffs for the first time in their short history!
