2008 San Diego Off-season Review
The Chargers started off with some little moves and then some questionable moves and ended with a bang.
First we have the signing of 34 year old Derek Smith coming over from San Fran he will give depth to the LB corp behind Stephen Cooper.
Next the team released 3 players that have been prime starters for a few years. The main one is Lorenzo Neal who I thought wanted to play one or two more years. I’m wondering if he would have renegotiated. Next we had OT Shane Olivea who lost his job during the year who would at the very least provide decent depth behind Jeromey Clary. It seems that Shane fell out of favor with the coaching staff in regards to his training and his motivation. Lastly they released Marlon McCree starting FS who seems to have lost his job to 2nd year man Eric Weddle who is showing a ton of promise. There will be some need for depth at the FS position.
The team in a surprising move resigned veteran back up QB Billy Volek. Most in the nes thought that Billy would move on in search of a starting gig in the NFL but he stayed where I guess he wanted to be.
A major question mark in the middle of this off-season is the health of starting OC Nick Hardwick who had off-season foot surgey. This word is that he could be out for a while and even be out till September. This will be an important issue going forward. After the draft I’ll revisit this issue.
Another hiccup in the off-season is the fact that Kassim Osgood is unhappy about his role as pretty much a 4th or 5th wr and a special teamer. The team has said that they don’t plan to trade him or release him as he’s very good at what he does but it doesn’t amount to a lot of PT.
Recently two players have signed their 1 year Tendered contracts. OLB Marques Harris and CB Cletis Gordon. Marques is Light’s Out’s backup right now so he doesn’t seem much PT as well. Cletis will battle Oliver Paul and probably a rookie for the nickel spot.
The first bit of major news happened most recently with the resigning of SS Clinton Hart to a 5 year deal. Clinton Hart who turns 31 in July was 2nd on the team in INT’s and 3rd on the team TKL’s. Terms of the deal haven’t been released yet but it’s more than likely back ended.
I’ll be back after 4/28 to review the draft………….. I’ll see you then.
