NFL Mock Draft Round 2- EFS 3000 Newswriters League

2.1 Detroit Lions ILB James Laurinaitis OhioSt

James Laurinaitis provides the ILB presence that the Lions need, he may start over P Lenon. Laurinaitis diagnoses plays very well, but may be deficient in timed speed, but his playing speed is excellent. He is not presently good in coverage so he may come out on 3rd downs initially.

Other possibilities: if the Lions don't draft an OL at 1.1 then they will surely look for one here. Conversely, if they did draft an OL at 1.1 then that may mean they have drafted a QB at 1.20, so they may look for a DE in this slot too.

2.2 New England Patriots RB Donald Brown UCON

Although I firmly believe with all the picks the Pats have their first two picks will net Brian Cushing and J Laurinatis even if that means trading up a couple of spots. The Pats none-the-less will be very happy to see Donald Brown fall into their laps at the 2.2

2.3 St. Louis WR Kenny Britt Rutgers

With the release of Torry Holt, the Rams have an alarmingly thin WR corps. The addition of Kenny Britt here will complement Donnie Avery and give Marc Bulger another target.
Along with the addition of OT Jason Smith, the Rams are much better off on offense than they were just a day before.

Other possibilities:
James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State... was a potential target at MLB to complement Will Witherspoon before being taken off the board two picks earlier.
Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State

2.4 Cleveland Browns Safety Louis Delmas Western Michigan

The pick here is once again on defense. As we take the #1 safety on our board, replacing the departed Sean Jones.

Delmas is a 5'11" and 202 pound powerhouse. He is a physical player and loves to lay hits on people. His closing burst allows him to play faster than his recorded 4.53-40 speed. He amassed 303 tackles in his college career and 109 as a Senior.

He is a leader that we can build around and the playmaker that we desperately need.

He posted 12 interceptions in his college career - 4 as a Senior; and, returned one 75 yards for a score.

Other possibilites: Had Kenny Britt, WR fallen to us, he would have been the pick. He has great size and speed making him a steal in Round 2. We also took a long look at Larry English, DE NIU, who is too good to still be on the board at this point.

2.5 Seattle Seahawks WR Brian Robiskie Ohio State

After grabbing the much needed OT in the 1st round Seattle grabs a WR who has the petigree and talent built for the NFL. This kid who can contribute from day one. Branch had surgery during the off-season and has missed a very percentage of games since joining the Hawks.

Other possibilities: Will Beatty, Duke Robinson

2.6 Cincy Bengals OT Troy Kropog, Tulane:

The Bengals have so many needs its tough predicting where they will go, but the Tackle position keeps popping up in everything I read/hear. Kropog should fill the need in a draft thats deep at Tackle.

Other possibilities: RB's LeSean McCoy or Donald Brown

2.7 Oakland Raiders DE/OLB Larry English, Northern Illinois

As badly as they need a stud at guard and tackle to protect the quarterback, the run through the top prospects at those spots gives them better value at a position they desperately need to improve upon.
English projects as a strong-side linebacker in the NFL, and showed decent speed for his size at the combine.

Other possibilities: OT Gerald Cadogan, Penn State; OG Duke Robinson, Oklahoma

2.8 Jacksonville Jaguars OT Will Beatty, UConn.

He was 1st team All Big East last year. He fills an immediate need on the Jaguars team. He is 6'6" and weighs in at 307 lbs.

2.9 Green Bay Packers OT Jermon Meredith So Carolina

The Packers desperately need an OT who can play either position since their two OT's are both breaking down and in their 30's.

Other possibilities: DE R Ayers, DT R Brace, or longshot would be OL Max Unger

2.10 Buffalo Bills TE Jared Cook

Buffalo adds one more weapon to its suddenly potent offense with Cook at TE.

Other Possibilities: OT Gerald Cadogan PSU, OG Duke Robinson Oklahoma

2.11 San Francisco DE/OLB Robert Ayers University of Tennessee

At 6'3" and 272 lbs, he is probably best suited to play OLB in the 3-4 defense. Which will work out fine for Ayers. Since Manny Lawson still hasn't lived up to his draft spot, the 49ers need someone that can help out on the outside.

Other options: OT Cadagan. The 49ers do need to add a body or two on the OL, however I think they can get a solid player in the next round.

2.12 Miami Dolphins ILB Dannell Ellerbe Georgia
With all the top WR on Miami's board gone, they keep building defensive depth with a tackling machine from Georgia.

2.13 New York Giants RB Lesean McCoy Pitt

A lot of ways the Gmen could go here, I think they stay on the offensive side of the ball, and draft McCoy. Not quite the speed of Derrick Ward, but they will need someone to replace his productivity. McCoy should fill that bill

2.14 Houston Texans SS Patrick Chung

The Texans have had a need for years for a hard hitting safety and Chung fits the bill. More of a SS type, this may not be the position he ultimately plays with the Texans.

Other alternatives: SS William Moore Missouri

2.15 New England Patriots CB Darius Butler UCON

The Patriots go to the well one more time and take butler from Conneticut. The Patriots are trying to get as many New Englander's as possible. But if the talent is growing in your backyard, might as well draft them

2.16 Denver Broncos - DE Tyson Jackson, LSU

Obviously a lot has changed in Denver's world since our first round mock, but I still think their defensive holes are a greater problem than starting Simms or Orton at quarterback. Besides, they may trade up to get Sanchez, anyway.
If they land Jackson here, they will be ecstatic that he has fallen this far. Projected by many to be a first round pick, Jackson is a load who excels at stopping the run. He may not provide the sack production that many DEs would, but in a 3-4 do you really bank on ends giving you the bulk of your pass rushing numbers? No.

Other possibilities: Could go for an outside linebacker like Clint Sintim. If they didn't grab a QB in the first round, there really isn't anyone worth taking here that they can't get in the third or fourth round. Someone like RB Mike Goodson could work here, too.

2.17 CHI Shawn Nelson TE Southern Miss

Da Bears need offensive weapons badly. The acquisition of QB Jay Cutler means that they finally have someone to get the ball to some receivers, so getting some receivers would be useful. Nelson is a big, fast receiving TE who can immediately take over from the likes of Desmond Clark and Greg Olsen and give Da Bears another downfield threat. Nelson is 6' 5" and 260 lbs, too big for most safeties to handle, and can outrun many of them with 4.56 speed.

It is also tempting to consider a few other positions here. Conner Barwin, the outstanding tweener DE/OB would fit in as a 4-3 DE. Chicago already has Ogunleye and Alex Brown at the ends, but they have been less consistent than desired. And at CB, Sean Smith is intriguing as possible competition to Tillman and Vasher. Lastly, Da Bears should consider Duke Robinson, the roadgrader OG from Oklahoma, as an upgrade for their LG slot, or Max Unger, the OC/OT from Oregon, as Olin Kreutz's eventual replacement. The 12-year vet can't last forever.

2.18 Cleveland Browns - Cornelius Ingram, TE Florida

Our entire receiving corp only posted 11 TD's last year and Kellen Winslow, who caught 3 of those in now in Tampa Bay. We are in desperate need of a playmaker on offense.

At 6'3" and 245 lbs, Ingram was a 1st rounder had he come out a year ago.

His good quickness (4.68-40 speed) and excellent body control make him a valuable target for our young quarterbacks. He has the unique abilty to catch the poorly thrown ball and is a game-changer once he has the pigskin in his hands.

His leadership and demeanor will make him a great adddition to the roster.

Ingram remains on the board due to his injury history. He sat out the 2008 campaign after posting 508 yards and 7 TD's in 2007. But, his ACL injury appears to have healed and he is the selection.

Other Possibilities: Shonn Greene, HB Iowa and Brandon Tate, WR North Carolina

2.19 DAL selects Duke Robinson OG Oklahoma

The temptation here is for Dallas to go for a sexier position and player, e.g. Cincy's DE/OB Conner Barwin, but they already have talent at that position. OG - particularly the left side position has been a problem of late with Kyle Kosier suffering through an injury-riddled season and Cory Proctor filling in. Despite dubious results, Proctor was resigned and Montrae Holland also returns, but the vet OG was unable to stay healthy enough to beat out Proctor. In short, the Boys need to start looking for a quality replacement here. And, as in the case of any OL, they need someone versatile enough to fill multiple holes if needed.

Oklahoma's Robinson is a huge, 6'5" 300 lb roadgrader who played tackle in college but projects more to an OG at the pro level. He sounds like an ideal match to Dallas' concept of a large, powerful, versatile lineman and should come in as a backup for 2009, and a starter in 2010. Norman, OK is just a couple hours up the road from Dallas, so I'm sure plenty of Cowboy scouts have had a chance to eyeball him several times.

Other possibilities: trade a few slots down, William Moore FS Missouri, Fili Moala DT USC, Conner Barwin DE/OB Cincinnati.

2.20 Eagles Select Rashad Jennings RB, Liberty

Philadelphia Eagles draft Rashad Jennings RB, LibertyThe Eagles were one of the leagues worst short yardage teams.Jennings is a big powerback that the Eagles can use to run behind Leonard Weaver and complement Westbrooks running style. While not a pure heir apparent for Westbrook the sheer number of picks in this years draft means the team can address RB in the future. Its likely the team will draft two running backs in this years draft.

2.21 New York Jets select Connor Barwin DE/LB Cincinnati

The Jets need to add a pass rusher to the mix. With only one year on defense Barwin has a lot to learn but he has the talent to succeed. His speed is his greatest asset and he should easily become a pass rush specialist. The fact that he also is a decent receiving Tight End makes this pick a bonus.

2.22 Minnesota Vikings OT Philip Loadholt OK

The front office thought long and hard about this move, but how many versatile C/OT players do they need? No more. Yes, Loadholt probably can't hold the blind side of whomever takes the helm in Minny, but he's probably the perfect fit (for Alum partner "ADP") to man the right side of that Viking's fierce running game. Left, left, left, and to actually be able to go to the right... what's the NFC North to do, Jay Cutler who?

possiblilities: C Max Unger, Eric Wood, or Wr Juaquin Iglesias, Derrick Williams

2.23 Atlanta Falcons OLB Paul Kruger Utah

At 6' 4" and over 260 lbs. Kruger will bring great athleticsm to a defensive unit
in need of another playmaker. Atlanta would appear to be getting a top notch
locker room guy as well.

2.24 Miami Dolphins DT Ron Brace Boston College

The Dolphins think they have their nose tackle of the future with Brace.

Other Possibilities: OC Max Unger, DB Sean Smith

2.25 Baltimore Ravens WR Derrick Williams Penn State.

The Ravens need a target for Joe Flacco. Williams' speed is a huge asset for the aging Ravens. He should quickly become Flacco's favorite target.

2.26 New England Patriots OLB Clint Sintim UVA

The Pats complete their defensive rebuild by grabbing a pass rushing situational hybrid DE/OLB. A perfect fit for the Belicheck defense.

2.27 Carolina Panthers DE Lawrence Sidbury Richmond Spiders.

With the status of Julius Peppers apparently up in the air and a draft day trade apparently imminent the selection of Sidbury provides a pass rushing presence. He definitely is not Peppers but who is.

2.28 New York Giants TE Chase Coffman MIZZ

The Giants reach a little for Coffman, but with the other TE’s off the board, the Giants get desperate to find someone to replace the red zone production of Plaxico Burress. At 6.7" Coffman can be that guy. He has great hands.

2.29 Indianapolis Colts WR Mohamed Massaquoi, Georgia

The time has come for Indy to grab a receiver to essentially replace Marvin Harrison. Despite a reputation for drops in college, Massaquoi has been flying up draft boards as of late and, if you believe the hype, he won't even be here at 2.29 on draft day. But if things pan out the way this mock has, Indy will snag a man who is known as much for his terrific character, leaderships abilities, competitiveness and his downfield blocking as much as for his receiving production, which is pretty impressive anyway. Massaquoi started all 13 games for the Bulldogs, catching eight TDs on 920 yards receiving.

Other possibilities: If this isn't the receiver Indy is targeting, they may go with Juaquin Iglesias, Brooks Foster or someone else. The Colts could also use a linebacker here, but the value is better for a receiver at the moment and I don't see them going defence two picks in a row.

2.30 Tennessee Titans WR Juaquin Iglesias, Oklahoma

Justin Gage and Nate Washington don't scare anyone as a starting twosome, and if the Titans pass up or miss out on the early run at the receiver spot, they might get a steal with Iglesias, who has average size (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) and decent speed but makes up for any lack in either category with elusiveness and great hands.
He could play flanker or in the slot at the NFL level, and is known for his spectacular route-running and fearlessness when going through the middle.
Talk is the Dallas Cowboys are interested in him because he can block on top of it all. The Chicago Bears might also have a stab at him if he's available.
He'd have a chance to start immediately in Tennessee.

Other options: Best-player-available according to their draft rankings, or specifically targeting a linebacker.

2.31 Arizona Cardinals OC A Luigs Arkansas

The Cardinals select a player who can immediately backup at any of the interior OL positions. He could start very soon.

Alternatives: If the Cardinals did not choose a RB in Rd1 they could take one here, depending upon who was available. A LB is also a possibility

2.32 Pittsburgh Steelers DB Jarius Byrd Oregon

With losses and creeping age in their defensive backfield, the Steelers add a young CB that they can groom in their system to take over in a year or so.
