NFC North
The lions, shockingly enough, had a great draft compared to the previous 3 years. Although they stuck to the draft board they have been heavily engaged in the past few months, they still had a mental breakdown on what their focus should have been – defense. But, with this year’s pool of players coming out of college, it was hard to “lock and load” on a major improvement on the defensive side of the ball. With that, they decided to build from what was available. Drafting Stafford was geared more toward “not making a mistake” versus drafting a franchise quarterback.
Mark Sanchez would not have been a great pick as 1st overall due to the fact of what type of offense he would be taking over. Stafford will learn along with the rest of the offense now, which is the plan – which seems to be the trend for the past 3 years now.
They should have drafted versatile and major upside LB Aaron Curry. Although he is not close to 49ers LB Patrik Willis (in which I was totally correct in my article on 17 May 2007 – see http://www.efsnews.com/artman/publish/article_640.shtml ) Seattle will reap the benefits from taking a needed filled position and a great player at the same time. The Lions DID NOT need a quarterback as bad as they do for defense (allowing 404 YPG, 223 passing and a ridiculous 170 rushing) that needs critical help. No, Curry wouldn’t have fixed it all by himself, but you would have had someone with heart and soul where money was not a big deal.
I have a gut feeling that Stafford is not going to live up to the expectations: sounds familiar with the previous “Franchise QB” to build around in Joey Harrington.
Now the pick of TE Brandon Pettigrew was a very good pick to address help on the inside and outside routes to free Calvin Johnson up a bit more. He will also be an immediate impact and replace TightEnds that have been lost with Detroit for many years now. He will start a new trend and will learn with Stafford as time goes on. We all know Detroit will take time, so that was a good pick.
ILB DeAndre Levy will start immediately as well. Not too surprising considering who else they have, but he will step in and be a box stuffer which will help their ridiculous run defense last year. Although young, he will step in a eventually be the signal caller on the “bad” side of the ball right now.
It will be another long and journal feeding frenzy as much to write about our teethless Lions.
