NFC North
The Packers finished last season at 6-10, which means they had a high draft pick in nearly ever round, a position they have not been in too frequently in the past 17 years. Therefore, it behooved them to find quality players who could contribute, in general they did.
Round 1: DT BJ Raji Boston College
When Kansas City took DE T Jackson, and Oakland took WR D Hayward-Bey, this set the stage for WR Crabtree to fall and setup the scenario where both need ( DT BJ Raji) and best player (WR Crabtree) were on the board at 1.9. Turns out that Thompson had to consider his options but ultimately chose the player who fit a huge need at NT. Raji has remarkable quickness for a man his size. He can rush the passer too, but that wont be his primary job in the 3-4. He will be asked to control the OC and OG, keeping them off the ILB.
Round 1: OLB Clay Mathews USC
After the draft, much has been written about how Thompson became enamored of Mathews and when he fell, multiple picks were traded to NE to obtain Mathews. Will this trade with NE turn out as well as the trade 3 years ago that netted WR Jennings? Mathews was drafted to play OLB, rush the passer and cover backs and TE's.
Round 4: OL TJ Lang Eastern Michigan
Lang is a versatile lineman, having played LT and guard. He is very strong, with quick feet. The question is whether or not he will tackle in the NFL. Apparently he is slotted to start out competing for OG slot.
Round 4: FB Quinn Johnson LSU
In the mold of former Packer FB Henderson, Johnson likes to hit people. Supposedly the Packers are instituting more power plays in their offense. If so then Johnson will play a role in these situatios.
Round 5: OT Jamon Meredith So Carolina
Lots of rumors about Meredith's attitude, physical ability, etc. circulated during Draft, causing him to fall. He could be tried at RT or LT, apparently RT will be his first destination. Meredith is strong too and smart-he had a 3.75 GPA in college.
Round 6: DE Jarius Wynn Georgia
Wynn has room to grow, he is 6' 2", 273 lbs. to become a 3-4 DE. Most likely he will be groomed for the future and will end up on the PS this year.
Round 6: DB Brandon Underwood Cincinnati
Started his career at Ohio St, moved to Cincinnati after academic issues, and had a fine senior year. Level of competition is of concern, but with time he could become a dime or nickel CB. Most likely ends up on the PS this year.
Round 7: LB Brad Jones Colorado
Played on Special teams all 4 years at Colorado. Was drafted to provide depth at OLB and be a special teams demon. Most likely makes the team as a special teams player in 2009.
EFSlant: Probable starters from this Draft for 2009 are NT Raji, and perhaps by mid season OLB C Mathews. FB Johnson will play on special teams and in power packages. The rest are possible future players but are at least 2 years away.
