View Full Version : Wednesday Injury Reports – Don’t Assume PROBABLE

When the NFL’s Wednesday Injury Report is released, a handful of teams (usually on west coast) report no player information and simply claim “Practice Not Yet Complete.”
Evidently, the way you are handling the status of the players on these teams is to declare them ALL as Probable.
Perhaps you don’t want to wait a little bit and check out the official team injury reports (which are generally submitted to the NFL and released publically within an hour of the NFL’s cutoff time for going to press).
If that is indeed the case, wouldn’t it make tremendously more sense to leave the status of the players from those teams as they were per the last update (as opposed to arbitrarily declaring them to all be Probable)?
When a player is going to be OUT for six weeks with a broken hand, is it in any way logical to screw up an EFS team’s ability to manage their roster from Wednesday night to Friday night during a given week because that player’s team had a Wednesday practice which ran twenty minutes long?
Going forward through the season beginning with next week, please leave those players as they were, or wait an extra hour and get the official Wednesday injury reports from the team’s websites.
For example, waiting an extra forty minutes this week would have allowed the status of injuries to be known and accurately input into the EFS system for all players from Oakland, Denver, San Diego and Seattle.
Isn’t it absurd to treat the players from these four teams in such a dramatically different fashion than those on the other twenty-eight squads without a really good reason? If the system cannot be perfect, it would clearly be wiser to err on the side of caution and consistency rather than assuming the totally flawed belief that, “If he’s not on the list, then he is Probable, and since we have no list, the whole team is therefore Probable.”
All of the EFS owners of the following players may have or did get burned due to this issue this week and may have been prohibited from placing and winning bids on players which they had every right to make.

Found DEN, SD, SEA. Couldn't locate anything on OAK. Sent updated injury reports to EFS this a.m. that included DEN, SD, SEA.

I appreciate you making the effort. Unfortunately, the reports you send to EFS on Wednesdays are what will stay in effect each week until you send in the Friday report. This might not seem like a big deal, but with the strict time restrictions for player bidding, and the effect this issue has on the ability to place bids, EFS teams will lose players or be forced to waive players off their rosters that they wanted to and should have been able to keep.
I'm sure everyone would be much obliged if you would refrain from sending in your Wednesday reports until you've made your best attempt to include those teams whose practices are initially cited as Not Yet Completed.
This will obviously be less of a factor on certain weeks, so hopefully it will require very minimal extra effort; it's also only an issue one day per week -- on Wednesdays -- since the Friday injury report designates traditional status terms instead of practice participation (and I'm pretty sure the Friday NFL report is always complete).
Thanks a lot for following up and making this process better.
One last small clarification. If you find that assuming a status of probable when data is missing is not acceptable, what is? Questionable? Doubtful? For the whole team? Probable is the default status. For every player that doesn't show up on the injury report of a team that does send in a timely report, his status is also probable. It isn't an assumption, it is just the default status for an active player in the absence of any data to indiate otherwise.

If you get no Wednesday injury data for a team, then the method should be to revert to the last valid report. That is, if you have no data on Wednesday, stick with what was reported the previous Friday... this simply means keeping the injury status for those players unchanged until you have a verified reason to change it.
The absence of data cannot be considered a legitimate cause to make sweeping changes.
There is no absolutely perfect answer for this scenario, but you will clearly be much closer to the truth and the reality of the situation if you keep the injury status the same as it was last reported than if you simply declare everyone as Probable. It's just a case of choosing the obviously better and smarter of two imperfect options.

When a player was OUT the previous week, that is better data than a missing team report. Why overwrite good data with bad?
And a player being incorrectly listed on the team report IS new data, even if it was wrong. You at least have some basis for overwriting data.
I think not updating the status of players on teams whose reports are missing is far better than setting everyone on that team to probable.

Who says that when people offer a viable solution to solve a problem, no one in authority pays attention?
On last Friday's NFL Injury Report, Raiders OT Kwame Harris was listed as Doubtful.
On Sunday, Harris was declared Out and Inactive; he didn't even dress for the game.
This Wednesday, Harris did not participate in any aspect of Oakland's practice; his real-world status of Out remained unchanged.
The Wednesday practice status report from the NFL was posted before the Raiders completed their day's work, so the section for data pertaining to Oakland players mentioned no one and was left blank.
Late Wednesday night, Kwame Harris was upgraded in the EFS system from Doubtful to Probable.
The factor in this determination given the highest priority was NOT that Harris was listed as Doubtful on the most recent NFL Injury Report which did include Raiders data.
The factor in this determination given the highest priority was NOT that Harris watched Sunday's game from the sideline in street clothes.
No, the factor which WAS given the highest priority in the determination of Harris' injury status for the EFS Wednesday update was that Oakland's practice finished a little bit after the NFL wanted to send out their status report.
In other words, the Raiders finished up their Wednesday session about 20 minutes later than the NFL would have liked them to (it's an Al Davis insubordination thing as you have probably already surmised by now), and as a direct result of this, there can be absolutely no debate and no doubt whatsoever that the only obvious conclusion one must draw from their tardiness is that every single member of the Oakland Raiders roster was healthy enough to Participate Fully in all phases of Wednesday's practice.
It's pretty simple when you think about it, and it really, really makes a great deal of sense; of course they all practiced fully, including Kwame Harris no doubt (regardles of what the newspapers reported)... after all, they did finish late, and everybody knows about the veritable relationship between the status of the players' health and the time that their practice ends.
The example of how Kwame Harris' injury status was dealt with and updated for the purposes of EFS in this case is not unique, but is serves as a quintessential illustration of the brilliant method currently in use which is running at full speed on all cylinders like a finely well oiled machine.
This could very well represent the epitome of perfection, sound logic and genius level decision making. Kudos.

That's a nice gesture, but unfortunately it changes nothing.
The problem remains exactly the same as last week (and next week, et al) because it's just too late.
Once EFS runs your Wednesday night report, their system will not be updated again until late Friday night.
The fairest and most rational solution remains the suggestion which has already been offered.
For teams which fail to submit their Wednesday injury and practice participation reports to the league office in time for the data to be included in the NFL's official release, the Quick Stats Service Wednesday Injury Report needs to have the previous Friday's injury status info inserted before it is made available to EFS.
There is nothing very complicated about recognizing the important need to take this action.
Sometimes the answers sit right in front of our faces so that they're virtually impossible for us to miss.

Just so everyone is clear. Quick Stats will not include previous weeks' injury data in any injury report. Ever. We will list any teams that didn't provide an injury update, like Oakland. This will provide EFS will all the information they need.
If the past couple weeks are an accurate indication, we will have everyone but Oakland on Wednesday nights. EFS can do a scan for any Oakland players in the Wednesday injury report. If they aren't there, keep last week's status. If they are there, update from the current report. We will re-issue the Wednesday report as soon as we have any/all the missing data from the original report, no later than Thursday morning. EFS can then process the updated report and everyone should be happy. The ball's in EFS's court.
