Here are the rules to my team:
01) i will build my team only via the rookie draft and "young" players through other means. Players are considered "young" up to the age range of 28-30, depending on their position.
02) i will not trade any of my rookie players away. Almost all will hit RFA.
03) i will allow myself ONE extension (of an ORC) on a 1 year contract per year. (Eventually, these will most likely always be ORC, but for now, over half my team is vets and i have no rookie contract down to 1 year.)
04) i will take advantage of the franchise player designation to keep 1 player per year OR accept the "next year 1st".
05) i will allow myself to match ONE RFA bid on per year.
06) i will allow myself to match ONE RFA -NOT- bid on, per year. Meaning, come end-of-april, all those moes who didn't receive bids, i can pick 1 of the litter.
[EDIT: For 2007, i will allow myself more than the above allotment for rules #5 & 6. i'd just have too many holes this year simply relying on ORC to remain competitive.]
07) i will only allow myself ONE guy via RFA every year falling within the positional age range.
08) i will only allow trading for ORC & young players. (i will make an exception for 1 year old guys traded to me in the sake of "cap considerations".)
09) i will only allow ufa & PS bids for ORC & young players.
10) i will only waive-claim ORC & young players.
11) EVENTUALLY an additional amendment to rules #7-#10 will be created to not allow my team composition to exceed a certain percentage of non-ORC players. For now, such a rule is unreasonable.
That's about it for now. i was thinking about this on the way to work today so i thought i'd place the rules here for everyone to see. My intention is to do this forever as long as league 1000 is a free league, but i could change my mind at any time.
2007 will become interesting as i have lost Reggie Wayne and will probably lose other vets and rise to over 60% ORC after our draft. My goal is to at least be a playoff contender every year with only 10 to 20% non-ORC, probably after the 2008 draft. Playoff contention will obviously be dependent on my (lack of) drafting skill.
As i think of other rules for my experiment, i'll post them here.

after today's trade, i will have 47 ORC. Nuts.
and the rest of my vets are available in the right trade... i sent some offers out today.

So i go into the season with 43 ORC, 38ORC of 46 active.
Week 1: only scored 372 but still won. Need more out of my OL & Vince Young.
Week 2: Scored 457 and won. Thomas Howard, 50 points!
Week 3: Scored 410 beating a strong division rival. Brian Westbrook scored 60 points! (and i tried my best to trade him in the offseason.)
[Between weeks, i traded away owen daniels and new FA pickup hutchins for Clint Ingram & a pick. This was to take care of an upcoming LB bye week problem. Traded Tommy Kelly for Dwight Freeney to tackle a week 5 bye problem at DL (and because i like freeney better despite his extended slump reaching to last year).]
Week 4: Scored a lousy 343 without a QB but still managed to split my games. My little undefeated streak is over. I'm now 4-1, leading my division in record but i'll need a PPG boost to keep the lead. Patrick Willis scored 32. Santonio Holmes scored 37.
Week 5: Only 348 points. I suspect this is how my team will perform thru the majority of games in what i think will be my toughest year of the experiment, year 2. My main ORC bright spot = my linebackers, with D'Qwell & Beason both peaking at 32 this week. And Peppers woke up with 25 points.
In spite of only having 380 avg ppg, i'm 4-2. Eerily, my points for & vs thru 5 games is: 2280, 2280. Crazy.

Clint Ingram trade bumped me up to 44 ORC (after i lost 3 PS ORC to PS bids).

my team's really starting to "hit it's stride" now, coming in under 400pts often (as i assumed coming into the season).
Week 6: Scored 443 to split my games. R.Harper, Peppers, D'Qwell, AJHawk and Pashos all topped 30 points.
Week 7: Lost with 374 points. Pat Willis scored 35.
Week 8: Scored a lousy 321 points, but good enough for a split. Top ORC was Alex Barron at 23 points.
I'm 6-5 in a 3-way tie for the division lead (where the other guy is 5-6), but my AVG PPG's not great at 381 where all my division opponents are better than that. I'll need to win my division to make the playoffs given the amount of strong teams in DIV 2 & 4.

after a bunch of trades since the c.ingram trade, i'm now back up to 44 ORC. with peppers traded, i have no vet contract > 1 year. i plan on franchising westbrook (unless i trade him before the deadline).

You would be crazy to trade Westbrook, franchise him.
I wish I took the trade offer of him for Steven Jackson now( don't think it was from you.He killed me this week , I was hoping to at least beat your team but 4 Kitna turnovers and maybe more fumbles didn't help. He has a habit of fumbling when hit or throwing ints when pressured, I suppose it could be his line sometimes, but he has to protect the ball better. Well looks like I'm done this week unless I can tie Coach Ferentz, the Wild cards are going to be better than two division winners this year probably, and of course I'm in a league with a 14-0 ( maybe) team. Which is suprizing cause he didn't make the playoffs last year, and the Menaces completely tanked this year ( no offense). Well maybe I'll start looking at RFA and see who I can get, keep, or get rid of during RFA. The Leinart and Steven Jackson Injures kinda hurt me this year, cause I had to ride Kitna the whole way and he's had a rough month except for one game.
Also the tough losss last week didn't help.
He did you notice it say 2005 for our posts , can you fix this?

You are correct, I didn't make the playoffs last year. However, I had the 4th highest point total scored in the entire league. For what its worth, I think I'll be 13-1 this week when its done, and this team isn't as good as its record. Some Luck has gone my way this year.

Since my last progress report, my team has finally consistently put up some points.
week 9 = Scored 405 in an intra-divisional loss to Pooh. Scoring 35+ were Patrick Willis, Jon Beason, Brian Westbrook (non-orc) Mason Crosby. Playoff chances look bleak.
week 10 = Scored 405 again, winning both games in the double week. Top scorers were Daryn Colledge (31) and Brian Westbrook (53).
week 11 = Won divisional game with 411 points. Scoring 30+ were jason allen, Vince Young (48!) and Robbie Gould (non-orc).
week 12 = Won both games on 451 points! My 30+ guns were Roman Harper, Michael Huff, Patrick Willis (60!), Daryn Colledge and Levi Brown. With my winning streak, if i win in week 13, i'm in!
[drum roll]
week 13 = All points aren't in. But given my 170+ point lead (with 503) going into MNF, i'm pretty sure it's safe to say i WON MY DIVISION! Holy cowpie batman! i assumed i'd be lucky to go 9-9 in the 2nd year of my all-rook experiment, not 12-6 as a division champion! Players that scored 30+ to help me hit 500pts for the first time: Antonio Cromartie, Mario Williams, Patrick Willis, Vince Young, Brian Westbrook & Mason Crosby.
Now on to be slaughtered in the wildcard week...
paladisiac

ok, i beat hogs both times this year to win the divisional tiebreaker and enter as seed #3. However, he slipped in as seed #6 so we play for a third time in week 14. (last time i was in this spot, winning both & playing that team again in the playoffs, i lost.)
Oh, i scored 544 points in week 13, 3 shy of the best week in the league for the year.

So i follow that up with a fizz-fest of 310 points before roman harper, blalock & lance moore hit me up for 25-ish points. No hat trick but it was cool just to make the playoffs in the toughest year of this ORC project, year #2. Hopefully my 2006 rooks start growing up next year & i can improve.
My top draft picks:
1.6
2.12
3.4
3.12
3.14
4.4
4.12
There are few big needs for my team but i need a ton of depth. To help with that i have 2 5ths, 5 6ths and 2 7ths.
RFA in feb will be next. For now, i believe i will stick to the rules for my team i opened this thread with:
05) i will allow myself to match ONE RFA bid on per year.
06) i will allow myself to match ONE RFA -NOT- bid on, per year. Meaning, come end-of-april, all those moes who didn't receive bids, i can pick 1 of the litter.
I'm most likely to keep Westbrook (tagged so it'd take a 2008 #1 & 2009 #1 for him) and Robbie Gould.
[EDIT: i will also allow myself to bid on one RFA guy. It'd have to be a highly-talented young player. For example, i bid on Andre Johnson in 2007.]

With my trade of Brian Westbrook, i will enter the 2008 with an ENTIRE active roster of Original Rookie Contract players. (i'm still debating if i allow myself some PS just-in-case guys.)
i have 4 of the top 34 picks, including #1.4 & #1.6.

About a third of the way through rfa in 2006, i had an idea to build a team completely out ORC players. At the time, i had a pretty solid team, with many stud vets. My team won the division about 50% of the time and almost always was a playoff contender or finalist. I traded off a bunch of these vets for draft picks and wound up with about 17 new rookies. I finished 3rd by PPG but was unlucky in my matchups and missed the playoffs.
In the 2007 offseason, i traded all of my remaining great vets except brian westbrook, ending up with 19 draft choices. I made a couple trades for rookie players too. I finished 8th (?) in PPG in the league but was lucky in my matchups and won my division, losing in the wildcard round.
In the 2008 offseason, i let RFA purge all but brian westbrook and finally found a trade partner for his services. This year i had a combined 21 draft picks, although few high picks. After trading away Marvin White, i only have 2 non-ORC remaining. I now have, in essence, an ALL-ORC team.
Thus ends Phase 1 of the ORC project -- to build a team completely out of ORC players in 3 years.
Now comes what could be the more difficult, and defnitely longer-scoped, part. Phase 2 consists of maintaining an ALL-ORC team and keeping the team competitive year-to-year. Not an easy task if you can imagine the percentage of rookie busts and underperformers that come through the NFL every year. Now i will need to not only continually build a strong team through the draft, but also be able to adjust my all-rook roster when necessary, trading areas of strength to fill positions of weakness. I will also need to maintain a consistent draft pool and even out graduating classes across years in order to not be hit too hard by the contract cap nor allow my active roster pool to "thin" out to the point.
Of course, ultimately my success depends on my third-hand evaluation of rookie talent and my ability to obtain the best value in each subsequent rookie draft. So in that i believe i'll need a little bit of luck to continually vie for the playoffs. But along the way i believe i've become a better drafter and had some fun in the experiment. That fun continues with phase 2, which concluded with my 2008 #7.16 pick.
For the record, here's what my team looks like after 3 big drafts, including a few trades for rooks. I look forward to an offseason of hopefully minor tweaks followed by an interesting all-rook season #3.
If you want a look at my roster, here it is: http://dynasty.efsports.com/efs/EFSFootballServlet?OP=detailedview&LID=001000&OID=15 .
Good Defense...terrible Offense. Will be fun to observe...Prediction...non-playoffs in 2008.Good luck

i'm probably going to lose in week 9 against one of the top PPG teams bone-bare at DB and without my top ILB players (as well as my other injury problems).
[EDIT: Pooh 1000, my opponent this week, is one of 2 teams that have a better PPG than me (although i expect that to change with these BYEs and injuries). He has 432ppg i have 430ppg. The difference is the missing players, losing Pat Willis and Beason alone sets me back probably a minimum of 25 points. Just crying ahead of time...]

Lost a valiant effort in week 9 as my ravens boys, ray rice & mark clayton, almost saved me. But i lost to topdog division rival Pooh 1000, 411-402. If Campbell could've thrown a TD at the end instead of a pick, i win. Sometimes it's that close...

"They" say that a draft can't be judged until after the rooks have played 3 seasons. Well, it's been 3 seasons for the rooks of my 2006 draft. Since my team will only be comprised of ORCs (which is my new direction for this team), it's very important i navigate the rookie draft well.
So how did i do?
2,006 1 1 3.000 02 15 Reggie Bush
- i needed a top RB knowing i could lose westbrook, my only good RB, in trade at any time. He's a dynamic talent who will never be a primary back but he could've had an outside shot at MVP in 2008 if he could've avoided injury. (Check how New Orleans started losing after he went out.) Good pick, not great since the 1.1 is supposed to be a homerun -- Mario Williams would've been the better choice. (But i ended up trading for Mario eventually.)
Grade = B
2,006 1 5 2.777 04 15 A.J. Hawk
- AJ Hawk, an OLB/ILB talent, fell to me. This is the guy i would've taken if i had the #3 pick. Even though he faltered with his shot at ILB in 2008, he's a very good weakside OLB.
Grade = A-
2,006 1 8 2.620 14 15 D'Qwell Jackson
- i wanted Jay Cutler being scarce at QB. But my trade up produced D'Qwell instead. Very good ILB who i later traded for other strong parts.
Grade = A+
2,006 1 13 2.378 01 15 Chad W. Jackson
- This was my first real misstep. In a year weak in WRs and a roster short on WRs, i trusted Belichek. He did have 1 or 2 good WR3-type games. *sigh*
Grade = D-
2,006 2 1 2.201 02 15 Michael Huff
- This was a good pick until early this year. He has some good potential, just slackin' off a bit. And the Oakland coaching carousel doesn't help. He gave me 2 solid years. Maybe the new staff will give him a shot again?
Grade = B-
2,006 2 10 1.849 03 15 Thomas Howard
- At the time, I thought i took the last decent LB choice. Turns out he was a great choice for where i took him.
Grade = A+
2,006 2 13 1.745 01 15 Leonard Pope
- Situational TE so far who hasn't lived up to whatever potential he has. The Arizona Cardinals don't employ the TE much with their WR talent, but if he could just start that's good OL points. I passed up Greg Jennings & Kiwaunuka for this guy??
Grade = D+
2,006 3 6 1.466 06 15 Joe Klopfenstein
- Another tight end swing-and-miss. Again, wasted talent plus a system that doesn't really feature him. The Randy McMichael signing didn't help either.
Grade = D-
2,006 3 8 1.410 14 15 Jason Allen
- On-and-off he's been a strong source of safety points. He's just inconsistent in real life which causes coaches to not keep him as a starter. I took him over MJD?
Grade = C
2,006 4 11 .976 15 15 Charlie Whitehurst
- I needed QB depth. He hasn't been given a chance to show much and when he has he hasn't shown much. Wasted pick.
Grade = F
2,006 4 12 .958 11 15 Antonio Cromartie
- Great young CB talent. Defends passes and scores picks.
Grade = A
2,006 4 13 .939 01 15 Haloti Ngata
- DT that shows up as DE in EFS. Good DE depth and would be an even better DT (if he qualifies as such in EFS in 2009).
Grade = C+
2,006 5 11 .716 15 15 Daryn Colledge
- I just missed a shot at Brandon Marshall. (What i wouldn't give to swap Whitehurst for Marshall.) Still, i took a high-scoring OL late in the 5th.
Grade = B+
2,006 5 15 .663 08 15 Parys Haralson
- Didn't do much for me until AFTER i traded him. (Figures.) Turned out to be a decent blitzer in year #3. (But didn't help me at that point.) He may-or-may-not have a starter role under Singletary.
Grade = C-
2,006 6 7 .568 13 15 Roman Harper
- This was a good pick. Great pick if not for his injury.
Grade = A
Overall draft grade = B-.
Out of these 15 picks i ended up with 8 that are still starters to this day. (9 if you count the now-traded Haralson.) Plus a couple that have been good starters when they've started, like Huff & J.Allen. Decent foundation draft, but not great. Mostly good choices with some killer-bad picks. I believe my overall draft grade should be in the B range (as opposed to a C+) based on my later strong picks making up for the more expensive earlier missteps.

So here in year 4 of the all-ORC experiment, i'm finally at a place where most NFL teams end up -- i'm compiling a list of needs, a draft list of value and meshing the two lists simulating the L1000 draft trying to determine what pool of players will be available with each pick. Yes, that's kinda what you do in any league no matter how you build your team no matter how many/few draft picks you have (assuming you have at least 1). But for this type of experiment, the draft is mostly how i compose my team with a couple trades per year making up the rest. The draft is SO important under this experiment that i need to model our league's draft in a number of different ways to ensure i can take the best value that comes closest to my team's needs.
Of course, the other question is, why do all this modeling 3 months ahead of the NFL draft? The answer is: it's THAT important to this team -and- i had a spare moment at work. (and i have my draft picks memorized (since i can't access efs from work) -- how lame is that?)
This will be the first year of my experiment that i won't have a top 5 pick. My first is 1.7, so the assumption is i won't end up with elite talent this year, which kind of helps in building a winning team. I'd actually like one more pick given my team needs, but also i'd like to shed a pick given total roster cap, so i may-or-may-not do some dealing. Otherwise, i like where my picks are in general considering no top 5 pick.
RFA's coming up and i think i only have 3 players, 2 not worth picks and 1 only worth a lousy #7, so that shouldn't add to my planning at all. As of right now, I've decided to stay ORC-pure and not make any RFA bids as i did in my first 2 seasons of this experiment.

The 2009 draft is underway. Going into the draft i had needs at almost every position, mostly depth issues of course. No picks came my way from RFA. I traded down from a 3rd round pick (i believe). I picked up sidney rice off waivers. Here's my draft so far:
#1.7 [traded down basically for #1.13 and 2010 #2. aaron curry was taken here.]
#1.13 clay matthews GB OLB
- with AJ Hawk moving to ILB and Gholston not doing well year 1, i needed more than just Thomas Howard
#1.14 brandon pettigrew DET TE
- He's the only TE in this draft i like. A well-rounded TE prospect, he steps in with Greg Olson ahead of my other bodies of leonard pope & jacob tamme.
At this point, i was kicking myself for not taking wells instead of one of the other two. i gambled Jason wouldn't take him but wasn't sure. Jason ended up taking P.Harvin, so...
#1.16 Chris Wells ARI RB
- i think this guy is an efs top 5-to-10 value, so i liked him here. But this glutted my RB corps a little, so i traded Kevin Smith back to Rich for the same price it cost to trade for him, a #2 this year and #3 next year.
I now have picks #2.4, #2.11 and #3.1 in the first round.
#2.4 Everette Brown CAR DE
- He was the highest efs value on my board, far above the next DE, and my #2 need going into our rookie draft.
paladisiac
2009-05-14, 22:17
more 2009 draft analysis:
#2.7 Josh Freeman TAM QB
- I traded up 4 spots, trading down from a 5th to 6th round pick and an out-year 7th in order to nab the last possible starting QB. I'm surprised he fell this far and was considering him as early as the 2.4. The only minus is his BYE is the same as Jason Campbell.
#3.7 William Moore ATL S
- Moore was a hot prospect until the combine. Atlanta needs him to step up so i'm banking he can be my #3 safety with J.Allen and M.Huff fading away and R.Smith just coming over to safety.
#4.2 Eben Britton JAC OT
- There was a run on tackles so i felt some pressure to take one, only having 3 viable tackles on my roster. He's still a good value, but i wish i could've waiting until the 5th to take him.
#5.6 Kevin Huber CIN XP
- At this point, i was looking for pure in-season daily value, and Huber should start. Plus, my only punter has 1 year left on his contract. I took punter over one other position i was gunning for.
#5.13 Jared Cook TEN TE
- I traded my two 6ths for this low 5th and a 2011 #6. i was hoping for 1 of 2 TE's and one of those was taken just before the 5.13. I traded out because my roster will be pretty tight as it is.
---
My initial feeling is i came away with a B+. I traded down in the first and still nabbed a good OLB. Compared to other league drafts i'm not in, i took Pettigrew early, but this team is TE needy. I feel Wells was GREAT value at the bottom of round 1, enough so that i traded Kevin Smith away, picking up an out-year #3. The Panthers traded a 2010 #1 for Everette, so i think he'll be given every chance to start. I feel kind of lucky to take J.Freeman as late as he dropped. The rest of the draft was pretty solid, although i probably took Huber a round too early.
We'll see in 3 years...

It turns out the draft did NOT go the way i wanted it to, so i'm glad i traded for jordy nelson. i also allowed myself a little leeway by plucking sidney rice off of waivers. i still wish i was in position to draft a WR at a place of good value, but it just didn't happen. (i couldn't pass up wells!)
traded santonio holmes and a low 4th for jordy nelson & 2010 #2. i'm attacking the vacuum i have at WR after Calvin Johnson with depth. Traded for it instead of drafting just in case the 2009 draft doesn't go the way i want it.

Here's my review of my 2007 efs league 1000 rookie draft:
2007 1.1 Calvin Johnson WR DET
The only beef you could possibly have with this pick is that i didn't draft Adrian Peterson. But given 3 WRs can start in an enhanced league and 1 RB, i'm going to give myself an A (and not an A+ because this was a gimme choice).
- Grade = A
2007 1.3 Brady Quinn QB CLE
When i made the pick, i was DESPERATE for a quarterback. (Still am.) i figured being an ohio boy playing at home, he'd be a safe pick as a starter for years to come. BUT i worried about the coach's mental health choosing between him, derek anderson and charlie frye, so less than 2 months later i traded ALL OF THEM plus a 1st rounder for vince young (who was a starter, then a head-case, and now a starter again).
- Pick grade = D
- Trade grade = C+
- Overall grade = C
2007 1.7 Patrick Willis ILB SF
GREAT PICK. This kid has been an IMMENSE 30+PPG STUD from DAY ONE.
- Grade = A+
2007 1.9 Jon Beason ILB CAR
I determined early on to be strong up the middle at linebacker and doubled-up with Beason. Beason's ALMOST as studly as Willis.
- Grade = A
2007 1.13 Paul Posluszny ILB BUF
Same philosophy as above. I trade up 2 spots and traded away Nick Barnett (to obtain an ALL-ORC team, remember) adding on a 2nd and 3rd rounder.
- Pick grade = A
- Trade grade = A-
- Overall grade = A
2007 1.16 Drew Stanton QB DET
Just when you thought i was a drafting god. I traded him one year later with a 2nd rounder for Jason Campbell, so i recovered some of his value.
- Pick grade = F
- Trade grade = B+
- Overall grade = C-
2007 2.1 Greg Olson TE CHI
I traded up for him, shipping a 3rd rounder to do so. This looked like a very good -becoming- great pick until Martz showed up. But i'm grading my draft based on years 2007-2009.
- Pick grade = B+
- Trade grade = B
- Overall grade = B
2007 2.9 Dwayne Jarrett WR CAR
He's had chances to start but has really squandered his opportunity. This was the extra 2nd i grabbed in the Polus trade.
- Grade = D
2007 2.13 Eric Weddle S SD
I passed on Brandon Merriweather to take Jarrett, so i make up for that boneheaded move here, and Weddle's been arguably better. I traded a 3rd and Dave Diehl for this.
- Pick grade = A
- Trade grade = B-
- Overall grade = B+
2007 3.8 Leon Hall QB CIN
This guy's been a shut-down corner the last 2 years, combined with Joseph, making the Bengals brutal to pass on.
- Grade = A
2007 3.9 Ryan Kalil OC CAR
I had no ORC centers so this is a very good pick with that in mind.
- Grade = B+
2007 3.10 Justin Blalock OG ATL
Better pick knowing how ATL has shaped up on offense.
- Grade = B+
2007 3.11 Steve Smith WR NYG
Traded away for a 4th and a 5th. Pick wasn't my idea so i'm just going to grade the pick-perspective of the trade based on ALL the value left on the board.
- Grade = C
2007 3.15 Quentin Moses DE/OLB MIA
He's shown some spark now-and-then but mostly has been a depth player for Miami.
- Grade = D
2007 3.16 Jason Hill WR SF
He's been decent especially considering the crud San Fran has had at QB. Drafted and left on my practice squad until he was bid off (because i only want ORC). Grade based on how he became.
- Grade = D+
2007 4.1 Levi Brown OT ARI
He's scored well in EFS despite not being a great NFL prospect based on where he was picked by the Cards.
- Grade = A-
2007 4.3 Aaron Ross CB NYG
Has been a good starting cornerback. Drafted and left on practice squad until he was bid off. Grade based on how he became.
- Grade = B-
2007 5.1 Mason Crosby XK GB
Good-to-very-good picker (mostly good) at the top of the 5th. He probably would've been there a round later..
- Grade = B
2007 6.1 Aaron Sears OG TB
This was a very good pick before he went nuts.
- Grade = C+
2007 6.2 Victor Abiamiri DE PHI
Has been on rotation the whole time for Philly. Drafted and left on PS until he was bid off. Grade based on how he became.
- Grade = C-
2007 6.5 Antonio Pittman RB STL
He played in a couple games as a backup to SJax and looked just ok.
- Grade = D+
2007 6.7 Adam Podlesh XP JAC
He's been a good punter for the Jags. Was injured for part of one season.
- Grade = C+
2007 6.15 Justin Harrell DT GB
This would've been a great pick if Harrell could've stayed healthy. Almost 7th round, he was a good gamble.
- Grade = C
2007 7.4 Doug Free OT DAL
Sat on him for 2+ seasons then let him go. Just after, he took over as a starter. (Ugh.) Grade based on what he was through those 3 years.
- Grade = C-
2007 7.7 Ben Patrick TE ARI
I had the other ARI TE as an ORC at the time so i figured ONE of those guys would do good as a starter. Not really.
- Grade = D
2007 7.16 Antwan Barnes OLB BAL
Gambled on Baltimore's value drafting here at the bottom. On-and-off he had NFL rotational value.
- Grade = D+
Most of my early picks through the first 3 rounds were good-to-stellar. Most of my later round picks weren't that great. I'm not going to dock myself for those later round picks because the later you go in the draft the bigger the gamble. It's those first few rounds that an EFS owner needs to NAIL to do well in an EFS draft, especially when one's entire team is built from the draft.
Saying that, i did well. I'm giving my draft a grade of B+.

2011-02-05, 01:57
Here's my review of my 2008 draft:
2008 1.1 Darren McFadden RB OAK
- Well, actually, i traded this pick away for 3 picks, then traded one of those away for 2 picks, for 4 picks total. Those ended up being Gholston, Brohm, Malcolm Kelly and Dom Crom. This grade is for the trade, salvaged only by Dom-Crom. When you have the overall #1.1, you need to MAKE IT COUNT.

1.4 Chris Long DE STL
This was a pretty good pick. A little early given how he turned out, but i really needed DE at the time.
- Grade = B
1.5 Vernon Gholston NYJ DE
At the time i had a choice between taking the high risk/reward pass rusher guy who had a decent shot at being only a workout warrior (Gholston) over the solid steady tackler (Keith Rivers). I erred and have learned from this, passing on these type of guys unless they seem to show the heart & passion for their craft (like Clay Matthews).

2.3 Limas Sweed WR PIT
When this guy wasn't injured, he didn't put forth much effort. The percentages of drafted receivers that wind up a good efs value is less than 45%, so i missed the coin toss here, especially considering Desean Jackson was taken a couple picks later.

2.6 Brian Brohm QB GB
The Packers typically draft good quarterbacks. Brohm is an obvious exception. (Flynn turned out good.) I thought he'd be worth something to another NFL team in trade eventually. NOT.

3.5 Dom Rodgers-Cromartie CB ARI
Ok, finally. Another good pick. This is the early range for taking cornerbacks and i hit on a good talent here.

3.11 Malcolm Kelly WR WAS
If this guy could only stay healthy, he would've been a decent pick. As it was, he showed brief flashes. Tease.
- Grade = D-
3.13 Jake Long OT MIA
Very good tackle on an average scoring offense. A -little- early to take offensive linemen, but good pick.
- Grade = B
4.4 Ray Rice RB BAL
Considering Chris Johnson went at 4.1, you'd think we were all dense drunkards in league 1000. Good scoop in the 4th round.
- Grade = A+
5.4 Sam Baker OT ATL
Smallish arms for a tackle but has been a solid starter across 3 seasons. Good value pick in the 5th.
- Grade = B+
5.5 Tracy Porter CB NO
When this guy's not injured, he's a ball defender and moonlights as a hawk. Again, good value pick in the 5th.
- Grade = B+
5.12 Andre Caldwell WR CIN
This guy has shown flashes, but his inconsistent play and Carson's noodle arm haven't helped.

6.3 Durant Brooks XP ?
I ended up trading the guy for a pick upgrade. He flamed out quick.
- Grade = C
6.6 Jeremy Thompson OLB GB
This guy was the possible answer at OLB for the pack for about half a season. That didn't work out though.
- Grade = D+
6.7 Taylor Melhaff XK ?
He wasn't in the league long.
- Grade = F
6.16 Steve Justice OC IND
If i remember right, this was a Colts OL gamble. Didn't work out although it seemed he had a starting shot in preseason.
- Grade = D-
7.10 Marcus Harrison DT CHI
Backup DT since he entered the league, at one point it seemed he had a shot to crack the starting lineup.
- Grade = D-
7.11 Roy Schuening OG STL
Never really had a starting shot. His only opportunity came when the entire STL OL was decimated with injuries... Then he went and became injured himself.
- Grade = D-
7.12 Reggie Smith CB/S SF
He's been the #3 man at best at whichever position he's played. Always the bridesmaid.
- Grade = D-
7.16 Jacob Tamme TE IND
Would've been a good pick if i didn't cut him before the 2010 season. This is why i preach patience for efs owners relying on the rookie draft to build a team. It takes players 3 years on average to make an impact. I missed Tamme's impact. If i kept him, i would've given myself a C+.

Overall, the 3rd through 5th rounds saved what would've otherwise have been a HORRIBLE draft. What the bleep was i smoking? Awful choices all around. As i just mentioned, it takes about 3 years on average for rookies to make an impact in the NFL. Translated to my EFS all-rookie experiment, this is why i went 7-11 and 396ppg in 2010 -- because of poor draft picks in 2008.
