53 man roster

I understand that it's a 53 man roster (active) and 8 player (practice squad) and no more, BUT do we have to maintain a 53 man roster to have a valid roster?

I can't remember seeing this (I did look real quick though, so I might have missed it in the rules) but if I felt comfortable with just 51 active players and 0 on my practice squad, would that be considered a VALID roster? Or do we HAVE to maintain 53 active?

the 53/8 are MAXIMUMS. if you're under these numbers, you'll have a valid roster (assuming you're under on your salary cap, contract cap, and no newly-drafted players have a 0-length contract).
