View Full Version : What is coming...
I know there are many out there that remember out goal of running a baseball game, then Trent got a real job! We now have others that will be helping, don't get us wrong, football is still the first priority, BUT, we are now back on this project. Keep watching, the general plan is head to head for 162 games a year with floating rosters... stay tuned for more specific rules. Don't go nuts and expect it in commercial version before 2007, but we are now back on it. Wish us luck!
In the next few weeks we will post the rules as they were 2+ years ago, again, this ain't a democracy, but comments welcome... most of the time. In my opinion (like anyone cares) the baseball game is MORE extreme than our football game, that to be determined. Stay tuned......

Baseball..... Ahh.... America's game..... Now THAT would be extreme..... I hope that it can get done..... Looks like it should be a great product..... Especially to a fan of both sports...

i remember that in the original rules the only pitcher who could qualify for a save was the designated closer. I think that other RP should also qualify for saves too- i realize it doesnt happen very often but often enough...
also i dont recall if the original rules included a category for 'HOLDS'....that would be a good one to include if you are considering rules modifications.
thanks

Tom,
there is a list of closers, only one can count with a save in a given EFS Game.
Holds were in already from before.

it's doubtful since i'm integral to the effort, but i'm hoping to have something in place for a "second half of the baseball season" -kinda thing.
i'm still converting football from the old pages. (only 2 pages left!) after that, i can focus on baseball (as well as other football improvements).
if that works out that would be great, we could test out the system and get it ready for full blown launch prior to 2008 season!

Those in the initial beta league will see "team penalties" and "league penalties" on the next update. Graciously, all teams begin with 0 penalties.
After a quick count, there are about 30-ish functional pages to complete for baseball. After today, the completed total will jump 200%, from 1 to 3. i also have a lot of "backend" work done for Detailed View & Find Player, but i decided to give myself a break and "accomplish" something i could see a quick return from. Thus, i knocked out penalties in the shake of snoop dogg's tail.
When it comes time to start beta-testing a league, I would be very interested in helping out!

I've now completed copying football to baseball code and making sure everything compiles. Some/little functionality has been converted as per our fantasy baseball rules, so i have a way to go in actually coding our fantasy BASEBALL implementation. However, =>i<= am now all set for -alpha- fantasy baseball. "alpha" is defined as most functionality being worked on and fixed/perfected as the functionality is needed. The first needed functionality will be the draft, which i shouldn't have much work for. (aka, a welcome breather for me.) Alpha fantasy baseball will be free like the beta leagues (of fantasy football), but will not be stable.
Now i have to see where Stan is as he has the next big work of loading current player data, setting up the draft data queues and other related work. In the meantime, review the draft room stuff and tweak what needs tweaking. (Replacing EFSPOS & NFLPOS for POS1 & POS2 sounds like one item.)

It'll go slow, but hopefully we'll make progress.

Our current big hurdle is fantasy baseball statistics. I'm working on that now. Trent K used to download them from mlb.com on a daily basis. Obviously we want something more automated, and that will most likely cost money, especially at the daily detail we want. This could end up being the hurdle that kills fantasy baseball for 2009.
Assuming we continue as a "go", we're hoping to have the draft stuff and roster-related stuff done by the end of March. We're probably going to ask that whoever wants to stay in this beta league has to be highly active, because our draft will probably be short -- if the coding is done by end-of-March, the MLB season starts April 5. Otherwise, there'll be a "staggared start" to our season.
Just an FYI - I don't think the list of teams you found are current because when Trent ran it he gave me a team that was abandoned and I do not see it listed in that list.
Good luck with baseball. I am anxiously awaiting it!

Status:
I'm very disappointed in the response i've received from stats providers. It's a recession -- don't you think they'd urgently want our business? I started hitting these guys up in January! Anyway, i don't think we'll be able to make April 1st, but i'm hoping we can call it a "strike-preempted" season and still start a little later than that. (We have the vet draft to do first, of course.) I'll continue to keep you posted.

UPDATE:
We're FINALLY negotiating with a statistics provider. There are still hurdles to vault so this could all fall apart, but there's finally some progress today. Right now, i'm thinking BEST CASE scenario shows us vet drafting in two weeks. But that's a best case scenario. There's a fair amount of work to do, and Stan has a bunch of it and could very well scoff at a two week estimate. (If you're curious, we have to load MLB divisions, teams, players, schedule and then come up with the EFS schedule because i don't think the original one we used is around anymore. After all of this, and probably some stuff we haven't thought of yet, then we can start talking vet draft.)
thanks for the update.... i can feel that we are getting close! looking forward to this very much!!

Here's the status, mostly not good:
We've found that the stats providers are out of our price range (by over $10 grand annually). If we have no stats, then we can't go forward.
The neutral news is that i've found where the raw mlb stats are. However, to do it ourselves would take a lot of time/effort. Stan's currently looking at if we can pull this off.
Rockey,
Not to butt in where I'm not wanted but...why not use Excel and macros to get you your stats? Some time ago I with a lot of help developed some macros that went out to NFL.com, downloaded the gamebooks for that week, stripped out the HTML, found the stats that I needed, and put it into a spreadsheet that I used to mimic EFS and their scoring. Once I had all my formulas correct in my spreadsheet all I had to do was run my macro and get my scores. I would think baseball would be much easier than football. Don't get me wrong, it took time to develop. I had someone who knew what they were doing helping me and it probably took about 40 hours total to do it but once it was done it worked for years. Only last year NFL.com redesigned their site and it no longer would work but I suppose that if I had someone who knew more about macros that I could have done it again. That would be your only pitfall, if the site you were using suddenly had a redesign and you had to start from scratch. I know for a 100% fact that there are experts out there who would help or at least see if it was possible to do. Yes, they would charge a fee but once you got it working, provided that website stayed as they were, you wouldn't have to pay them again. For me I used NFL.com for 3-4 years. Now maybe this isn't practical but you never know without asking.
Just my 2 cents. Trying to help. I'd love for baseball to be a product EFS provided.

I would think there would be some legal issues involved. Using those stats (per NFL.com) to run your website and make a profit. NFL would want its piece of the pie. As a home user there is nothing stopping you from doing that as you are doing it for your own personel use, but as a company (EFS) you would need to pay for the stats I believe.

The latest update i have is that this stats effort won't start until around September. With the extra time, I'll be working on a football redesign. Of course, I could receive the "go ahead" to work on the stats tomorrow... If September/October, i'll still want a quick beta test of everything.
