Contract Extensions Question

I have noticed that in several of my leagues teams are extending players with long term contracts even though the season is over. I'm assuming these were players with only one yr remaining(players who were scheduled to go to RFA). Is this legal?

if a player has a 1 yr contract now he cannot be extended-that player will be in RFA in 2008.

most likely those teams are taking advantage of remaining salary cap room and extending players now rather than in 2008

So what they are doing is illegal then? Shouldnt the system have some sort of stopgap to prevent this?

no its not illegal...the only players you can extend at this time of year are those with contracts that are 2+ years in length....you cannot extend players with 1 yr contracts-those guys are going to be in RFA in 08. your last chance to extend guys with 1 year contracts in 2007 was way back in early summer.
