I've read the rules, but i'm still not 100% sure,so,better safe than sorry. Are there any restrictions on when or who can be assigned a franchise player tag? Specifically...can a franchise tag be applied to a player ANY time during the season,or is there a cutoff week?..Also,can any player, regardless of whether he has a 1 year contract or a 5 year contract be assigned the franchise tag? Thanks

You can assign it at any time regardless of how many years the guys is signed for with the one exception of a player that has already begun in RFA. Meaning if RFA has started, you cannot assign the tag after RFA has begun.

In the past we typically wait until just before RFA begins to assign a tag, but you can also use it on a player to keep their salary from increasing at season's end.

here's what I've picked up on how to use the franchise tag. Don't use it during the season. Wait til after the year is over, go through all your top scoring (highest ranked) players and then sift through their salaries. Use the performance salary chart to fgure out which one of those guys is going to get the biggest raise once the performance values to into affect. Franchise him. Then, after the performance raises take place, extend the contract of your franchised guy, to release the tag .... you can then use your tag on your most coveted RFA (because RFA doesn't start for a month or so later). Once RFA is over, you either get the increased comp for your franchise guy or you retain him, and your franchise tag is again unused.

Repeat.

Thanks J..the only part i'm not sure I understand,of your explanation is the end, where you put the franchise tag on your most desirable rfa,and than you say that the tag is "than unused". Does a player eligible for RFA who goes thru it automatically lose the franchise tag?

yes, if you designate a franchise guy and he passes through RFA, when you 'resign' him, the franchise tag is then lifted
