View Full Version : Rookie Draft Analysis
I will attept to give you my opinion on the 2008 rookie draft picks.
1.1 Pornstars- Darren McFadden RB Oakland Raiders
I believe this is a great pick. I think many people in our league are undervaluing Run DMC. In most other leagues he is going #1 also. He will be the best offensive fantasy player from this draft within 3 years.
1.2 WANAF Vikings 68- Johnathan Stewart RB Carolina Panthers
This is another wonderful pick. A workhorse back for a team who badly needs a feature back. He will probably pay more immediate dividends than even Run DMC.
1.3 Black Sunshine- Jarod Mayo LB New England Patriots
This guy may be the sleeper pick of the draft and a wonderful building block for Sunshine. He could have a Patrick Willis effect in a great scheme for LB's.
1.4 Bulldogs- Glen Dorsey DT Kansas City Chiefs
Dont get me wrong I think Dorsey will be a beast, but to take him top 5 in fantasy is insane. I am not sure I would take the #1 DT overall in the top 5 because they just dont score that many points. A huge reach in my opinion especially since they already have okoye. Glad this guy is in my division.
How can Run DMC be undervalued when he went #1?
Trading a lot to go up and get Dorsey is a terrible mistake. Is this an EFS newbie? The best DTs go in the second round, if that.
I think he is undervalued because no one was willing to trade up for him when Pornstars offered. So it seems as though everyone else was saying take him we dont care I can get someone just as good, but in my opinion we will all wish we had him in a few years. Except the guy with Adrian Peterson. :) lol
1.5- Achilles- Keith Rivers OLB Cincinnati Bengals
This is another great pick in my opinion. ESPN says he is going to be the biggest impact rookie this year. Who knows if that is true but he was the top player on my board and really solidifies my LB corps.
1.6 Flag Pond Flash- Jordan Dizon LB Detriot Lions
This is a very boom or bust type pick. To me this is a very strange pick with the likes of Gohlston and Long still on the board not to mention Matt Ryan. We will know within a year or so if this was a good pick or not?
1.6 Flag Pond Flash- Jordan Dizon LB Detriot Lions
This is a very boom or bust type pick. To me this is a very strange pick with the likes of Gohlston and Long still on the board not to mention Matt Ryan. We will know within a year or so if this was a good pick or not?
If you need immediate help at ILB, Dizon is THE guy to have in this year's draft. He's got the best chance to start week 1 at ILB of any player in this year's draft. I thought he was a sleeper, but he's going high in all the drafts I am seeing posted.
I disagree Mayo is THE guy and probably the only week 1 starter at ILB.
1.7 Black Sunshine- Matt Ryan QB Atlanta Falcons
Great pick for a guy with only Brees. Didn't give up to much to get this pick either. Ryan will start from day 1 and will be a decent backup for Sunshine.
1.8 Damage Inc.- Rashard Mendenhall RB Pittsburgh Steelers
This is a good pickup but with an OLB like Gohlston on the board I am not sure a team who already has Grant, Maroney, and Westbrook should be selecting a RB. Gohlston would have looked nice but Mendenhall may pay off down the road.
I disagree Mayo is THE guy and probably the only week 1 starter at ILB.
Mayo will be the best player of the lot, I agree, but he plays for a coach who notoriously hates rookies, and has lots of vets. I doubt he'll start from week 1. If he does not start week 1 at ILB, he could be listed as OLB all year in EFS.
Rivers is a sure bet to start, but not a sure thing to be inside.
Dizon was moved to MLB upon being drafted, and is the only one currently there.
I stand by my previous statement - Dizon is the best bet if you need ILB (as EFS lists them) help this year.
I never said Rivers was an ILB. I do believe Mayo will start week one and will be the biggest impact ILB of this class. I'm not sure Dizon will even start as they have a pretty decent ILB in Paris Lenon. We will soon see though. If I am wrong I will eat crow and tell you, you were right. If I am right I expect the same coutesy. lol :)
1.9 NRF Primetime- Chris Long DE St. Louis Rams
This is another great pick and a great end to match with Trent Cole. I do not look forward to facing this guy twice a year. Long has a chance to be special.
1.10 NRF Primetime traded to Pornstars- Vernon Gohlston OLB N.Y. Jets
This is a wonderful pick. To get a talent like Gohlston at 10 is pretty amazing. Porn was considering him at 1 and then got him at 10. Gohlston and Briggs will terrorize teams in Porns division for years to come.
1.11 Bulldogs- Derrick Harvey Jacksonville Jaguars
Well after his first pick this was definately a much better choice. I'm not as sold on Harvey as I am Long but he is on a much better d-line so if he does play he will have a chance to do well.
I'm not sure Dizon will even start as they have a pretty decent ILB in Paris Lenon.
Lenon has moved to strongside LB, and Dizon is moving inside. He is already listed as their starter at MLB. The only competition (currently on the roster) is Buster Davis, yet to play a down in the NFL.
Long term, I'd rather have Mayo. This year, Dizon. I am not sure why you are convinced a coach who has never started a rookie LB will start now. He may start, but there is little evidence to suggest this is a sure thing.
Rivers played a lot of minicamp at MLB. If he does start inside, I think he'll by far be the best of the bunch this year and give Mayo a run for his money long term. H
In any case, with Rivers and Mayo both gone, Dizon was not a bad pick. ILB is a premium position, and he will be given as good a shot as anyone to start right away.

I have lenon so it would be nice to know were your getting this information? :D

Detroit free press had articles referencing it, but most are now archived and pay to read.
Ourlads currently has Dizon listed as starting MLB (with B Davis the only other player at the position) and Lenon as starting SLB. Obviously those are not definite (as little is with rookies) but one thing is: Detroit drafted Dizon to be a MLB and he will be tried there first. Another thing that is definite: Boss Bailey plays for another team and they need an SLB.
EDIT: From PFW "Yes, first-round OT Gosder Cherilus figures to get every chance to start at right tackle, and second-round LB Jordon Dizon will get the same crack to earn the starting “Mike” LB spot. "
I don't know where the "Detroit has a great MLB already" sentiment is coming from. It was considered a weakness in their defense (along with most other positions, lol) and a draft need.

Keep going, I'm enjoying the reviews!!!!!
This being my first draft in a 16 team league, I am surprised by all of the OL going what to me is early. I am unused to seeing any go in the first 3 rounds, except for autopicks.
I was stunned to see an OL go at 18, but Pollack is clearly the gem of the OL class.
I don't understand Long and Albert going ahead of Clady. All should start for the majority of their rookie seasons. Long and Albert are going to teams that promise to be awful offensively for at least two years (and the Chiefs for as long as Herm is coach). Clady will start for a above average to great offense.
Picks I loved:
Kevin Smith and Matt Forte. Seem to have the least in the way of them being primary backs among all rookies except Run DMC. I would have put Mendenhall as the #2 back and #2 overall player in this draft until he got drafted by Pitt
Ryan. The best QB in the draft at 7 is a no brainer, regardless of need.
Beau Bell. This draft shows how premium a position ILB is. Its considered a pretty weak LB class by NFL standards, and they still flew off the board. Bell has a great chance to play a lot right away, and should do very well in the 3-4.
Flacco and Henne. Great values for where they went for guys who look to start pretty soon. I hope they last this long in drafts for teams I own.
Picks I hated:
Felix Jones. I've yet to read anyone project his best case scenario as a #1 back. Everyone seems to think that even if Barber leaves next year, Choice will be the 20 carry guy and Jones 10. I think Reggie Bush has shown us that 8-10 carries and 5 catches a game does not make an elite back. I think he'll be far less valuable in EFS than Forte and Smith both immediately and long term, and Ray Rice and perhaps others long term.
The DTs. The ultimate non-premium position. They don't put up much in the way of numbers and are very unpredictable. Very few guys score more than 12 points year in year out. It seems the better the player, the less they get in the way of numbers and the more their DE teammates get. If you think Dorsey will be that good, trade that pick for Hali or McBride. Ellis cost less, but is even less likely to make an impact. These guys just won't win EFS games.
RB Chris Johnson. OK, I hate this pick far more for the Titans than for EFS and I just wanted to get that out there.
