Now that the 2008 EFS Draft for Lg 25 is in the record books, how do you think your draft went?

Being totally and completely biased, I felt I was in pretty good shape after RFA and some offseason trades and could draft for the future instead of for immediate need. That mindset took a lot of pressure off the Sizzers’ front office to produce an instant home run hitter or two in this year’s draft.

1.8-Kevin Smith RB Lions: Initially I thought this may have been a reach but it seems about right looking at other drafts

3.4-Earl Bennett WR Bears: OL Pollak was my target here, but he went a full round earlier. I think this was my biggest reach as he might have still been there at 3.11 or maybe even 4.9. I like this guy though and think he has a good shot in the NFL.

3.11-Philip Merling DL Dolphins: I needed some depth at this position and in my opinion he was the best DL available at this pick.

4.9-Ryan Clady OL Broncos: Very happy with this pick. After seeing Clady go a lot earlier in other drafts, this seems like excellent value for a good plug and play OL.

5.11-Tim Hightower RB Cardinals: Almost a certain reach, but I had him or Q Groves DL targeted for my final pick and Groves went two picks before me.

My Draft was actually a bit different, I traded picks to acquire players I wanted at certain positions:

1. I traded my three first round picks for RB J Addai, LB D Ryans and DB Ndukwe.

2. traded a 2nd and 3rd to move up to take OL Pollack Indy.

3. traded BBell and rd 5 and 6 picks for QB J Johnson TB.

4. 5.9 RB Tashard Choice Dal. well now that Dallas has signed Barber to longterm contract this choice is a bit redundant.

5. 6.9 WR Eddie Royal Den. took a flyer on a guy that may or may not pan out.

6. 7.9 DE or is he LB? Marcus Howard Indy. Small but quick, can he play in NFL or not. again a flyer....

No starters other than Pollack, perhaps, even he is not guaranteed anything.

Looking at past few years we decided to overhaul the roster this offseason, that we have accomplished. whether it means we can get to Playoffs and advance is another matter....

tc

PS If anyone needs a DB I have a surplus I would be willing to deal (Allen, McGowan, others?.....)

also willing to listen to offers for LB/DE Marcus Howard Ind.

How did my draft go? Eh.... I guess it was ok. I didn't have many picks, since I'm known for trading my picks away. I was pleased to see LB-Curtis Lofton fall to me at 2.6. I felt like I was strong at LB but couldn't resist picking him, as I think he's got the makings to be a good one BUT I turned around and traded him away for S-Kenny Phillips. I felt like I needed to upgrade my DB's and tried a few different trade offers with Mr Joe Bengals, but he wouldn't budge from wanting Lofton from me. Hopefully Phillips turns out to be a solid starter for many years, or else I may have made a big mistake.

With the 3.6 pick I decided to go with WR-Early Doucet. With this being a deep draft for WR's I opted for Doucet because he's in Arizona. I think he's already a pretty good receiver and figure if Fitzgerald (who I have) or Boldin get hurt, he could become a solid spot starter for me. I had 4 solid starters at WR but felt like adding him could help me more down the line. We'll have to wait and see.

With the 4.11 pick, I was pleased to a see a DE like Lawrence Jackson still available. Wasn't really a need pick, but I figure he could be another "down the line" type of player for me. I'll really be keeping my eye on him to see how he progresses.

With my final pick, at 7.12, I was happy to see an OL like Duane Brown still there. I'm not overly happy with the depth of my O-line, so Brown was a no brainer for me. He should instanly start on that line and if the Texans can find a good running game soon, they may be able to move the ball more consistantly (that is, if Andre Johnson can stay healthy). Jury will be out, for a while, on this one.

If I had to grade my draft, I would give myself an Incomplete.

I just took a quick overview of each teams draft and I feel like the 2 teams that did the best job were Virginians and Redzone Aliens. Just great, both teams in my division. I hope I'm wrong on this one :( . I think Mr Joe Bengals did alot to infuse as much talent as possible to his team. He hit on a bunch of position needs (except for QB) and even made some smart moves, like the drafting of Crable (LB-NE). Sure, Crable "may" not turn out to be much, but seeing the ages of Bruschi and Vrabel(who MrJB has on his squad) I thought it was smart to take a flier on him, especially middle of the 6th round.

Just a few of my observations.

I believe I filled several depth areas with players that will be NFL starters in their 1st or 2nd years --- Stewart, Rivers, McKelvin, Long, Flowers, Albert. I reached for a couple of Michigan guys that could surprise - M. Hart and A. Arrington. The one area I'd like to have done better with was WR - but there was not really any depth or outstanding talent there. Also like my Dexter Jackson pick - he will fit in Tampa and could be a stat producer from a smaller school. I really wanted James Hardy! Think he will be perfect in Buffalo and will be a quality WR for years to come!

Still have work to do and I am available for trade discussions!
